Joe-Perry-Obituary

Joe Armstrong Perry

Obituary

April 18, 1946 - Sept. 18, 2008

Out of respect for his wishes, no memorial service was held for Joe Armstrong Perry, 62, of Coos Bay.

Joe was born April 18, 1946, in Orange, Calif., while his father was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He died Sept. 18, 2008, in Coos Bay after a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Joe lived most of his life on the South Coast of Oregon. He was an avid hunter as well as a staunch supporter of conservation groups for wildlife. He considered the outdoors his sanctuary. His father taught him how to cut timber as a teenager and he worked and made a good living as a timber cutter all his life. He served as a reserve police officer for the city of Myrtle Point. He worked a year as a police officer in Shoshone, Wyo. Joe's love for the outdoors took him back to logging. His logger peers considered him an exceptional timber cutter. For several years, Joe owned a very successful timber cutting contracting business.

Joe and his wife Carol were devoted to each other. They both shared a bond with the outdoors and enjoyed the country life, the woods and the river, where they lived with their dogs, cats, horses, chickens, ducks, rabbits, donkeys and cattle.

Joe was a Jack-of-all-trades and master of them all. He was a self-trained excellent carpenter. Combining that avocation with his logging trade, he fell a tree on the property he owned with Carol, bucked it, milled lumber from it with an Alaskan chainsaw and, with the lumber he made, built a beautiful barn, which he designed with Carol's wishes in mind.

Joe will be truly missed by his family and many friends.

Joe is survived by his wife, Carol Poli Cyphers-Perry; his father and stepmother, Glen and Maxine Perry; his son, Doug Perry, all of Coquille; his daughter, Heidi Jo Perry of Klamath Falls; and his sister, LaVerne Pace of Cottage Grove. Joe was always taking care of various matters for his family and spent many years being the "big brother" to his brother, Chuck and stepsisters, Kathy Whelchel and Julie Breuer of Klamath Falls and Tanya Hamel of Boring.

Joe was predeceased by his mother, Phyllis Hilton Mills; and his younger brother, Charles "Chuck" Perry.

Arrangements were under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Service, 396-3158.
