Joe Randall Smith, 82, of Gilbert, joined his wife in their heavenly home on Friday, February 27, 2015, leaving from CAMC-Memorial Division. He was born on April 25, 1932, at Landville, a son of the late Joda and Carrie Davis Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Flossie Hatfield Smith. Joe was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. Along with his family, he was part owner of Brooks Funeral Home and Smith Monument at Gilbert. He was a member of the Justice United Methodist Church where he enjoyed handing out candy to everybody he met. Joe attended Man High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1952 through 1954. On June 3, 1956 he married the love of his life, Flossie Hatfield Smith who passed away on January 8, 2011. Dedicated to his family, he was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Joe loved all animals and enjoyed feeding them especially birds, hummingbirds, and feral cats. He loved staying active and could often be seen helping his son Gavin in his business, Stacy Equipment, Inc. Joe will be remembered for his unique sense of humor and friendliness to everyone. He will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Gavin (Audrey) Smith of Gilbert and Gretchen (Mark) Ryll of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren, Stacy (Jarrod) Hatfield of Charleston and Tyler and Paul Ryll, both of Greenville, SC; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Emma Hatfield of Charleston along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2015, at the First Missionary Baptist Church at Justice with Rev. Jim Nagy and Rev. Diamond Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Larkin-Hatfield Cemetery at Horse Pen. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church also.
