Not sure what to say?

Todd and I just learned about Joe's death. When we lived in Portland he was a bright light in our lives. He was (and is)my idea of what a pastor ought to be. A very special man.I'm sure he's shaking up heaven every bit as much as he shook up Portland.

Pastor Smith baptized two of our sons, George and Christopher, he has a lasting place in our hearts. His sermons and Judith's beautiful voice filled that beautiful church every Sunday, we left inspired.
I remember him as a spiritual guide who valued history, education, music, and faith in action, and he typed the newsletter on a manual typewriter! Peace to him and his family, truly thank you for your commitment and inspiration.

Dear Judith and family,
We were Blessed to have you and Pastor Joe, to call our friends, and to worship at St. James. He officiated at our wedding in 2001. I am sad at his passing, but he is with the Saints that passed before him.
Love,
Dr.David and Beth Schramm

As a child growing up in Hoquiam, I loved going to Saran Lutheran Church and listening to Pastor Joe speak. He used the bible and humor in a way that made me want to listen.
As an adult I grew to admire his wisdom and kindness.
As a long time family friend I send my love and prayers to Judith, Anne, Adam and their families.
God gave us a beautiful man who made a huge difference in this world. I was one of the many who was blessed to know him.

I will always remember Pastor Smiths unbridled optimism when his daughter Ann, was undergoing cancer treatments. Jason and I send our positive thoughts to Judith, Ann and Adam. Mark Anthony when giving his funeral oration for Julius Ceaser stated that the "good (men do) is oft interred with their bones" I doubt if that will be the case with Pastor Smith. The good will long be remembered!

Pastor Smith assisted my family when my Mother Dorothy Lesh died. He was a wonderful man and helped us through a difficult time in our lives in September 1977. Linda Hammersley

Pastor Joe Smith was a strong influence in the Hoquiam Community. He organized many outreach projects. One sermon he shared with our congregation stressed "take a risk". I practiced this concept in many aspects of my life: taking strangers into our home and buying a 50's ice cream parlour business. So Joe Smith changed my life. He was a good friend.

I got to work with Joe through the Bar, and loved his big heart, sense of humor and commitment to righting wrongs. The world is less kind without him. My condolences to his family and friends.

What a good man for a long time. I'm lucky to have known him.
