I am so sorry to learn of Joel's death. What a great loss to his family and the environmental community and individuals who were fortunate to have known him. I was one of them. He was a great teacher to many of us. We worked together so many years ago during my tenure on the Florida Audubon Board and later when he was working on land issues in other parts of Florida. We were all fortunate to have had him as a friend and in our lives.

Joel was an innovator, a doer, and an inspiration. He touched more lives than his family may know. I was among those concerned when he left Florida but what he started here continues. And clearly he started something new and wonderful in the Northwest. No one could ask for a finer legacy.

Joel was a true patriarch in the evolution of Florida's environmental stewardship in both the governmental and non-profit spheres. His wisdom and energy was phenomenal, and his enthusiasm and good humor made him fun to be around and greatly enhanced his ability to inspire others and get things done. I love the image of Joel sawing logs on Vashon Island as he modelled his life-long belief that with the right understanding and care people and the natural environment can co-exist joyfully.
