The Rev. Glenn Davis warned Maricel Murray that tough times are ahead. She had lost her husband, Joel L. Murray, and was raising their son, Jerry, alone. "Maricel, one day Jerry is going to look at you and ask, 'Why did my daddy die?' and you are going to have to answer that question," Davis said, before offering a possible answer: "Real men stand between their families and what could harm their families." Murray, 26, of Kansas City, Kan., was killed Sept. 4 by an explosive in Baghdad. He was a 1999 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Riley. He completed technical school and worked for a commercial air conditioning company in DeSoto. Next, he attended Kansas City Kansas Community College and worked as a package handler for UPS. It was Joel's dream to enlist since he was 13, said his brother-in-law, David MacKenzie. "Ever since I've known him, he has wanted to go in the Army," MacKenzie said. Classmates remembered him as funny, skittish, smart and loyal. Murray last spoke by phone to his father Sept. 2. "He was just ecstatic. He was very proud of what he did," Kenneth Murray said.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you...

You are remembered and respected. Thank you Sgt Murray!
