Conkle Funeral Home, Avon Chapel - Avon Obituary

John “J.R.” R. Decker, 56, of Roachdale, passed away on August 13, 2025. Born in Wabash, Indiana, and raised in Huntington, J.R. graduated from Huntington North High School, where he was active in the Boy Scouts and proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Following in his parents’ footsteps, he attended Butler University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. J.R. dedicated 25 years of his career to Walgreens, where he faithfully served his community.

Outside of work, J.R. treasured time with his beloved wife, Terry. Together, they enjoyed golfing and family traditions such as the annual Cedar Point trip. J.R. was a longtime member of Avon United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous committees and even joined a mission trip to Louisiana to help after Hurricane Katrina. In recent years, he devoted himself to volunteering at the Mill Creek Christian Support Center food pantry, transporting and distributing food to families in need.

J.R. was preceded in death by his father, John Will Decker II. He is survived by his wife, Terry Higgins Decker; his mother, Margery “Midge” Decker; his brother, Bradley (Gena) Decker; and nieces, Mikaeli and Mackenzie Decker.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 13, 2025 at noon at Avon United Methodist Church with Visitation from 10am-noon before the service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Creekside Animal Rescue at 11791 N. Not sure what to say?

Sadly, I didn't have much opportunity to get to "know" JR. I believe I met him only once. And, what I do remember is his Chili! At a Creekside Animal Rescue Meeting he served his home made Chili - and it was fabulous!
JR will be missed by many - those with two and those with four legs! Peace be with you, Terry.

I am glad to have known a great man. I will always remember him as a caring person. I will never forget the time he volunteered on a Saturday to help a foundation by doing outside cleanup on a hot summer day. He will be forever missed. RIP JR

We enjoyed watching J. R. grow into the fine young man he became. We send our love and strength to his family.
