Alloway Funeral Home, Inc - Merchantville Obituary

John N. Alloway

On September 20, 2021; Age 60; Life-long resident of Merchantville; Survived by his loving and devoted partner in life and business, Connie McGlynn; Dear son John W. and his mother Elizabeth, Caring sisters Mary Beth (Frank) Spitz, Rosemary Brooker and Regina (William) McGrail; Uncle Bryan McKernan; and many nieces and nephews.  John will be deeply missed by Dorothy Daniels, Connor and Catherine McGlynn.

John was a 1979 graduate from Bishop Eustace and earned his Bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University.  He was a track and field star although he did lose to Carl Lewis.  After graduation, John attended American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Services, Inc. where he became a licensed funeral director working side by side with his father and later becoming Owner/Manager of the Alloway Funeral Home.

While John worked at the funeral home, he was an Adjunct Professor at American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Services and moved on to Mercer County Community College in the Mortuary Science Program for many years.  He was an entertaining speaker and beloved by the students.  Longtime member of the New Jersey State Funeral Director Assoc. and West Jersey Funeral Directors Assoc. where he currently served as the 2nd Vice President.  Additionally, John worked as a Medical Investigator for the Camden County Medical Examiner’s office which merged with Gloucester & Salem Counties for 30 years.  He was also a frequent Guest Lecturer for the Camden & Gloucester County Police Academies for death investigation & forensic science.

John was very active in his community, serving as a Merchantville Councilman for 12 years (President & Public Safety Director) and a Camden County Committeeman.  He was a loyal Roman Catholic and very proud to be a Past Grand Knight of St. Peter Council #6735 and a member of the Bishop J.J. McCarthy Assembly 4th degree Knights of Columbus.   As a longtime active member of St. Peter’s RC Church in Merchantville, he served as an usher and happily volunteered his time for charitable acts and helping his community in any way he could. Additionally, he was very active in supporting the Senior Ministry at St Peter Church.  John was most proud and extremely honored to have been asked by his parish to coordinate in the Hosting of Saint Maria Goretti during her “Pilgrimage of Mercy” at Saint Peter Church On October 7, 2015

He absolutely loved the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Saint Joseph’s Men’s Basketball team and considered himself a Philadelphia sports fanatic.  He loved horse racing & was part-owner of several racehorses.  In his forties, he played baseball for the AC Surf, primarily as a relief pitcher.  And tying into his love of sports he was thrilled to have a bit part in the movie Invincible about Philadelphia football player Vince Papale.

He was an extremely devoted father and loved to spend time with his son, especially during swim meets where he volunteered to become an official just so he could get an up-close look at every race.

John was a kindhearted gentleman who touched the lives of many people, enjoyed helping the families at Alloway’s, always had a joke and a smile and his quick wit was phenomenal.  There will be a greeting for John on Friday Evening, Oct. 1st, 5-8 pm at Alloway Funeral Home, 315 E. Maple Ave., Merchantville and All are invited to his Memorial Mass on Saturday, Oct. 2nd, 11:30 AM at St. Peter RC Church, 43 W. Not sure what to say?

I recently found out about his death and was it was so saddened to hear. He was there for my mother and father and brother. Such a lovely man. There is definitely a set of wings waiting for this gentle, loving gentleman.

John was the greatest funeral home director I ever worked with as a pastor and chaplain. Professional and very respectful at all times. He cared for our family like no other funeral director. He was kind and a great person to be friends with over many years. My dad and his worked on the railroad for many years together and where great friends. When at funeral home always felt at home and always supported by great staff. He will be greatly missed and prayers for family and friends.

To Beth & John
I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. 26 years of marriage. Life is so precious

Connie, I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I had the privilege and honor to take care of your ‘husband’ John at the hospital and his love for you was pure and full of happiness. He was so lucky to have you in his life and I am certain he will be missed terribly. May his memory be a blessing. Martyne

ONE OF THE FINEST GUYS TO KNOW IN AND OUT OF BUSINESS. A FINE NEIGHBOR. WILL REALLY BE MISSED.

So sorry to hear of John’s passing. I have known him and his dad for many years. He was such a great person and he has helped me plan several funerals over the years. My sincere condolences to Connie and their families. May God bless you during this sad time.

John was a great swim official and I enjoyed my years with him on various swim decks. He was very bubbly and interesting to talk to and, being so, I enjoyed our conversations. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Sending sincere sympathy. Our family used Alloway Funeral Home on two occasions and I have never
met a kinder person than John. There was nothing that John did not handle for our family. He made
going through sad times so much easier for everyone. I cannot say enough about John and the world
has lost a very special person. Rest in peace John and thanks for taking care of all families during difficult
times.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. My condolences
