John Bagel of Hoffman Estates Services for John Bagel, 89, formerly of Roswell, N.M. and Chicago, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 208 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60194, where he will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Interment will be in St. Luke Cemetery, Chicago. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, 330 W. Golf Road, Schaumburg. During World War II, John served in the South Pacific with the Army 33rd Infantry Division, and was honorably discharged Dec. 10, 1945. His long career focused on the business of finance. He retired from Chicago Specialty Manufacturing in 1973, after serving as their chief financial officer for many years. He and Eleanor moved to Roswell, where they enjoyed the scenery and their life in retirement. In 1990, they moved back to the Chicago area to be closer to their family. John loved his Lord Jesus Christ foremost. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumburg. He also liked to read, travel, eat out and always enjoyed being with his immediate and extended families. Forty friends and relatives recently helped him celebrate his 89th birthday. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor Bagel (nee Dundek); loving father of the late Daniel Bagel; dear brother of the late Bohumil Bagel and Olga Vano; and dear uncle of Lillian Srivastava of Chicago, Thomas Bagel of Erie, Pa. and Milan (Ruth) Bagel of Roselle. He will also be missed by many cousins, the relatives of his wife Eleanor and many other friends too numerous to mention here. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Peter Lutheran Church are appreciated. For information, 847-882-5580.

Not sure what to say?

Funny that this should pop up in my email today. I was just thinking of him and the last time I saw him just the other day. I think we meet a lot of people along the way and sometimes struggle to recall their name or things about them, but then there are people like John that just remain clear and in your mind forever. We can use more people like John in this world.

John was one of a kind! I loved having him as a neighbor. He was kind and he was interesting!. I enjoyed our little chats and pictures he would always show me. I still have his prayer card. Some people will never be forgotten.

Uncle John,

I am so glad that you and Aunt Eleanor are together again, safe and secure in the Lord's love in Heaven, and you are reunited with Daniel. You are all a family again.

Thank you for all your love during my life. Thank you for being who you are and for being such a wonderful part of our family. We must continue through the rest of our life journey without you now, but the wait to see you again and knowing your pain is gone will be worth it.

Rest now,...

Friends like Mr. Bagel is a rare tresure. His kind gestures and witty statements will always be remembered. We are grateful for the years we were able to share with him and his wife. They were a joy!
