Not sure what to say?

My deepest sympathies to John´s wife Nancy and family. It was so like John to "retire" by founding an American law firm office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. I knew him as co-Counsel on two antitrust litigations in the 1960´s and found him an inspiration to younger lawyers.

I didn't realize -- or appreciate -- that Mr. Barnum was teaching us with each assignment or request, but throughout my career the lessons I learned from him have been true and valuable. In particular, his emphasis on ethical conduct from every lawyer has remained a guiding principle for me.

To John's friends and former colleagues:

We deeply appreciate your thoughts, memories and condolences. For anyone who is able, we hope you will join us for a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1830 Connecticut Ave., Washington, D.C.

as a very young lawyer eons ago, I had the pleasure to work for John on a number of Cravath cases. He was not only a very smart, skillful advocate, he was a great, often over demanding , teacher . His insistence on precision and careful thinking stayed with me throughout my career and I owe John a great debt of gratitude. He was one of the best.

Dear Nancy and family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather.

John was a true citizen of the world. My condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES

My deepest sympathies to John' s family. I worked with John as co-counsel on antitrust litigations in the 1960s. He was an inspiration and a role model for younger lawyers, for whom he always found time. John E. Donnelly
