John was always looking for little-known music, especially recordings of unknown 19th-century composers.
My best memories are of his masterful and intelligent singing of polyphony. I remember one Vespers at Immaculate Conception when we sang a Cipriano da Rore 'Regina Caeli' with a steady cantus firmus in the tenor, but intricate and convoluted alto and bass parts dancing around it on either side. For some reason we didn't have time to practice, although the rest of us had sung it...

Memories of high level music making with John are flooding back.
He was kind enough to lend his fabulous voice to our choral efforts at St. Philomena Church.
Accompanying him in a supremely difficult (for him and for me) song recital was memorable.
His singing with me of Schönberg's op. 1 songs at Trinity Cathedral bordered on the definitive.
This was a superb musician.
