James F.T. Bugental, Ph.D. 1915 - 2008 James Bugental, one of the founders of Humanistic Psychology, passed from this world on September 18,2008. Beloved teacher and friend to hundreds of students and colleagues, he will be missed, not only for his many achievements, but for the warmth and caring he brought into every encounter. His illuminating and compassionate work was fundamental to the development of existential humanistic psychology. The author of seven books and numberless articles, Jim served as president of the Association of Humanistic Psychology, the California State Psychological Association and several local psychological societies. He was formerly a faculty member of U.C.L.A., Georgia Tech, and Emeritus Clinical faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine, a founding member of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center and the recipient of many prestigious awards. In private practice in Los Angeles and the bay area for over 50 years, Jim presented his work at over 250 universities, colleges, hospitals and clinics throughout the world. After suffering a stroke over five years ago, which cost him much of his memory, Jim continued to live the message of his work and teaching. His essence remained in his kindness and warmth, his continuous expressions of gratitude to everyone around him, his contagious humor, his active acceptance and transformation of his limitations, his ready smile and frequent expressions of his love to his family and friends. Jim leaves Elizabeth, his wife of over 40 years, their daughter, Karen Atkinson, her husband Tom, his grandsons, Tommy and Connor, as well as his older son, James Owen, his daughter, Jane Eum, by his now deceased former wife, Mary Edith, his granddaughters, Christina and Julianna Eum, and his brother, Robert Bugental. A celebration in Jim's honor will be held on Saturday, October 4, at 12:00 p.m. at Pacific Institute in SF, (for info call 415-861-3455 or www.pacificinstitute.org.)
