John Randolph Brown, 81, of So. Charleston, WV, died October 8, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Toni Brown of So. Charleston; his son, David R. Brown of Charleston; his sister, Dr. Lynda Salamon of Debary, FL; his nephew, Noah Salamon, his wife, Genny, their three children, Cas, Ben and Dominick all of Woodland Hills, California; his nephew, Matthew Salamon, his wife, Nicole, their two children, Zoe and Zeb all of Debray, FL. John leaves behind many loving family members and friends who will miss him.
John graduated from Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He received a M.S. EH. Master’s Degree in 1973 from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee. During his lifetime, he continued his pursuit of continuing his education in Environmental and Conservation fields.
John began his professional career with the West Virginia State Health Department and Environmental Engineering Divisions. From 1981 to 1999, John was Chief of Training and Staff Development with the Office of Environmental Health Services with the West Virginia Department of Health. From 1977 to 1981, he was the Environmental Health Program Chief, Sewage Section, Division of Sanitary Engineering and from 1973 to 1977, he was a Sanitarian IV, III, II Division of Sanitary Engineering. From 1999 to 2011, he was associated with Potesta & Associates, Inc. as a part-time Environmental and Engineering Consultant.
Those who knew John will remember his quick wit and humor, his commitment and dedication to his career, his integrity, his work ethic, and his professionalism, exhibiting both competence and expertise in his chosen field of work.
John was an avid collector of just about everything including antiques, coins, watches, jewelry, glassware, etc. His interests and hobbies were extensive. He was a consultant to many who needed his acquired knowledge. He was also an active, adventurous, and enthusiastic fisherman, a true naturalist and environmentalist, always pursing his love of the outdoors. He was also a world class crossword puzzle aficionado, and he was widely and well known for his unique sense of humor. He was also a devoted and loving husband and father, a kind and caring friend and an honorable and moral man.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Clover Community Church, Clover, with Rev. Randy Whited officiating. Burial will be in Clover Cemetery, Clover.
Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, is assisting the family with arrangements.
