John and family, sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I speak on behalf of myself and the Belmont Fire Dept. with our deepest condolences. We are so deeply saddened by the passing of Jackie. We both knew him more than 40 years ago in Somerville. After we bought a summer home in Wells we reconnected with him. Often we asked him to stop working and join us for lunch at the Midway pool so we could take a 'walk down memory lane' together. How we all enjoyed those conversatons. Mr. Burgess was one of my earliest coaches and my friends' Dad. I was always struck by his demeanor. Even as a kid he was a man you respected for his kindness and his strength of character. He never felt the need to be loud or bully you but his soft spoken manner still got his point across. In a word, he was solid. He was a solid coach, solid teacher, solid Belmontian, solid husband and solid father. He was a man I liked very much and enjoyed playing for and being around.
