John Bymark Obituary

John Victor Bymark

John Victor Bymark, of Hibbing, passed away on January 30, 2025, at the age of 95.

John was born in Biwabik to Alice (Lindgren) and C. Victor Bymark on March 24, 1929. He spent his youth in Biwabik and graduated from Biwabik High School in 1947. During his youth he enjoyed spending summers at the family cabin in Marine on St. Croix along with his sisters Harriet and Janet and a number of cousins.

He initially attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and then was drafted into the Army and served his country overseas during the Korean War. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he completed his education at the University of Minnesota earning a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. His professional career with Pickands Mather and Cleveland Cliffs began with the start up of Erie Mining Company near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. He later transferred to the Pickands Mather Research Laboratory in Hibbing where he was involved in the development of new processing plants including Hibbing Taconite and servicing other PM and Cliffs operating plants in the US and other countries. He then transferred to the Hibbing Taconite operation and closed out his career as Chief Metallurgical Engineer until his retirement in 1992.

In his spare time while enjoying retirement, he served as a metallurgical consultant for twenty years helping to improve quality and productivity at Iron Range Taconite Plants. He especially enjoyed his lengthily consulting agreement stint at United Taconite where he enjoyed working with both hourly and staff personnel which resulted in implementing several process improvement advancements.

John and Joan enjoyed being members of the Eshquaguma Country Club and season tickets holders to the Minnesota Orchestra.

During his retirement he enjoyed his yearly winter travels with his wife Joan to Honolulu, Hawaii where they enjoyed the balmy weather and visiting annually with newly acquired friends from many different countries.

He is survived by his sons, Jim (Jeanne) Bymark and Todd (Kathryn) Bymark; five grandchildren: Nina (Glenn), Tom, Grace (Jeffrey), Jeff (Kate) and Ellie (Morgan) along with two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan; sisters, Harriet (David) Mattson and Janet (Richard) Trezona.

At his request there will be a private funeral service at a later date with burial at the Lakeside Cemetery, Biwabik.

Memorials may be directed to the Biwabik Area Civic Association, P.O. Box 309 Biwabik, Minn. 55708 or the Engineers Club of Northern Minnesota, P.O. Box 812 Hibbing, Minn. 55746
