Not sure what to say?

I was the battalion chaplain for John's unit. As made my rounds from the various Combat Outposts I focused on connecting with Marines on a personal level. One of those Marines was John. I learned that his wife was also pregnant and was due about the same date as my wife. Every couple of weeks when I saw him we would chat about how our wives were doing and talk about fatherhood and being a dad. It was a hot August day when a massive IED detonated, taking his life. He would never make it...

Dear family of Corporal John Tanner,
You have never met me but I'm the Officer in Charge of the Emergency Section of a Combat Hospital who was in Iraq the day CPL Tanner died. Not only was I there but I was in the triage tent when he came into our facility. I was the one who wrote his name in the EMT ledger. I want you to know that he wasn't just a number. We felt loss in your loss; we honored him. If you ever want to reach out to me, my email is [email protected].
God bless you...

I received a YouTube suggestion today of a short interview with John's mother, Melanie. My 20 year old son is currently at Ft Benning (Infantry), getting ready to graduate in June. As I did a bit of research, I was moved by Corporal Tanners' story, and his families dedication to remembering his life. On this Memorial Day weekend, please let me say: Thank You Corporal John Corey Tanner, for your ultimate sacrifice and Love of Country. Almost 14 years later, I find your courage inspiring! God...

EMT saluting fallen soldier

To the family, friends and Service Members who knew CPL John C. Tanner,
I was the Officer in Charge of the Emergency ward of the Combat Support Hospital which accepted the care of CPL Tanner after he was wounded. This message is to let you know that we were honored to care for our nation's heroes. We did not take that duty lightly. From the moment the helicopter touched down, we scrambled and took over care in the Triage tent just outside of the EMT. We had lined the roof of the tent with...

5 years ago today, a Marine and I argued over who would carry the mine detector on our next patrol in Iraq. The other Marine won the argument and ended up carrying the equipment. Hours later, he calls me up to investigate the device shrieking a warning. As I stood next to this Marine, the IED went off, and that Marine's life was taken. My life was spared by his selflessness and devotion to duty. Had I won the argument, it would be me that never got to give my last goodbyes. That Marine...
