Lorne and Sons Funeral Home - Delray Beach Obituary

John H. "Jack" Caldwell, III, age 85, passed away peacefully with his wife Hope by his side at their home in Gulf Stream, Florida on February 19, 2022. Jack, the son of the late Janis Brauer and John Caldwell Jr. was born on May 27, 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in Marion, Indiana. He attended Marion High School and graduated with honors from Hamilton College, Class of 1958. Jack went on to receive his LL.B. from the Harvard Law School, Class of 1961. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps later that year and was commissioned as an Officer in the Judge Advocate Division.

After serving his country, Jack practiced law in Washington DC for a number of firms and established himself as an expert in the travel industry. In 1979, he argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Southern Railway vs. Seaboard Allied Milling. As his expertise grew, he developed innovative approaches to travel management, frequently wrote for industry publications and organizations. In 1988, with more than 20 years representing corporate travel departments, Jack founded Caldwell Associates which quickly became a leading travel management consulting firm. In 2011, Jack closed his practice, but continued to provide consulting services as he relocated to Gulf Stream, FL.

In his leisure, Jack enjoyed traveling, great food and disciplined exercise. He completed the New York City, Boston and Marine Corps marathons. He hiked many of the Adirondack 46ers and cycled scenic roads in several countries. He loved the ocean, music, dancing and the company of good friends. A consummate gentleman, Jack was beloved by his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Hope, his son John H. Caldwell Jr III, his daughter Margaret J. Caldwell (Brian J. Mital), step-daughter Shannon Lutes (Todd), step-son Brad Anderson (Katherine), and his brother Richard C. Caldwell (Kaye) and their families. Together they have nine grandchildren; Connor Caldwell, Charlie Caldwell, Hunter Lutes, Addison Lutes, Camden Lutes, Whitney Anderson, Sally Anderson, Bradley Anderson, and Coleman Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Letitia A. Caldwell.

A funeral will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach at 11:00AM on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022. Jack will be laid to rest at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
