John J. Carney
UNH Professor

Barrington: John Joseph Carney of Barrington, NH, died on Saturday, July 7, 2007, after a brief illness. The son of the late John Joseph and Lillian Miller Carney, he grew up in Orange, NJ as a dedicated and vocal Yankees fan.

After receiving his bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Seton Hall University and his PhD from Syracuse University, he moved to Barrington, NH with his wife, Heather Campbell Carney and began his career as a professor of literacy at the University of New Hampshire. During his 34 years at the University he became an expert in the area of children’s literature, and graduates of his courses can be found teaching in elementary schools throughout the Seacoast.

John was active in the Barrington community, where he worked as a volunteer at the Barrington Recycling Center and the Barrington Food Pantry. In 1999, the town presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his dedicated service to the food pantry.

John’s passion for and dedication to his family, his community, and his work as a teacher were defining aspects of his life. His kindness, his sense of humor, and his love for life will be missed tremendously. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of his loving wife, Heather Campbell Carney; his daughter, Maura and her husband, Greg Robinson; his son Sean and his fiancée, Darcy Mack; his son Patrick and his fiancée, Katelyn Romeo; his brother, Stephen Carney; his sister Mary Beth Carney; his extended family and his many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 13, 2007 at 4:00pm in the Courtyard Reading Room of the Dimond Library at the University of New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the Barrington Food Pantry, 41 Province Lane, Barrington, NH 03825.

Not sure what to say?

John's memory will live on in his students and the good work he did in his research, his courses, and in the community.
His memories continue to build bridges in education.

John Carney was a dedicated and passionate professor who knew more about children's literature than the text book writers. Every class he would haul in carts of books (all from his personal library) and wow us (students) with his knowledge - he made it all come alive! He will be greatly missed.

To the family and friends of John,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Professor Carney's passing. He was my mentor and teacher for four of the classes in the Reading Specialist program. His classes were always informative and challenging. Despite a busy full time teaching schedule I always looked forward to his classes. Dr. Carney inspired me with his stories, knowledge, humor, and professionalism.

Dear Carney,

I am so sorry for your loss. I am a former graduate student of Johns. He was always very kind and supportive. This is quite a loss to the reading community.

I took classes from Dr. Carney in the mid-eighties and I admired and respected him deeply. I have never worked so hard to please anyone in my life. I think this must be the mark of a great teacher. I also wondered whether he ever got a replica of Toad's bathing suit. I hope so. Thank you for sharing his talents and passion for teaching with so many. He will be deeply missed and always kindly remembered.

Dear Carney Family & Friends,

I was a student of Professor Carney this spring for Children's Literature. He was a wonderful man. I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of his passing. He was so knowledgeable and taught with such passion and warmth. I feel grateful to have learned from him and to have met him. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Sincerely,

Dear Carney Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Professor Carney's passing. Had I known earlier I would have attended the service. I first met Professor Carney when I was applying for graduate schools, he was the one Professor that took the time to explain to me in detail about the program and graduate assistantship. This is just another example of his desire to go above and beyond for his students. I will always treasure everything I learned from his classes as they...

To the Carney Family,
The Starrett family was very saddened to hear of the passing of John. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Tom, Lillian, Tommy, Peggy, John, Marilyn & Cindy (Starrett)

To The Carney Family:
I was a student in professor Carney's last Children’s Literature class. He was a wonderful teacher who was truly passionate about teaching. He made his opinions known and was respected my many. He touched many lives including mine and I am so thankful I got the chance to know him. He will be greatly missed.
With Deepest Sympathy,
