John Joseph "Jack" Carroll Sr.

Colonel Carroll was the Director of AWS when I was a student. He always reminded us to look at "the man in the mirror." We had to be true to ourselves and our Corps. He later became my regimental commander in the 6th Marines when I was the CO of Company K. After a particularly bad failing on my part at CAX (Combined Arm Exercise at 29 Palms) he stopped the exercise and gave, what we called since, "The Sermon on the Mount" where he went through every good decision and bad decision that I had...

I served under Colonel Carroll as a midshipman at The Ohio State University and later at the Amphibious Warfare School. He lived and breathed the Corps and instilled in all of us a desire to serve with the same degree of passion he had for Country and Corps. The Colonel was instrumental in preparing me to be an Officer of Marines and I am in his debt for his guidance and mentoring. Semper Fi, Colonel Carroll.

So very sorry to hear of the Colonels passing. It was my honor to have known him when he was on active duty. A man of the highest integrity and character. A role model for all of we junior officers. Fair winds and following seas old friend. Semper Fi, Mark
