Palmer- John S. Champney, 74, passed away on July 9, 2021. He was born in Concord, NH on October 23, 1946, son of the late Donald J. and Hazel (Adams) Bruso. John grew up in Palmer and was a graduate of Palmer High School. John honorably and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, from 1964 to 1968. He worked as a polisher and engraver at Smith & Wesson, in Springfield, for 45 years, before retiring in 2013. When he wasn't working, John liked to spend time at the shooting range and also enjoyed to get together with friends for a few games of tennis every week. John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marisa (Santos) Champney, their daughter Adria Champney, his two grandchildren, Jasmine and Jocelyn Hicks, his siblings Karen Cole, Donna DuPont, Lolli Blain, and Michael Champney and his wife, Tracy, his brother-in-law Antonio M. Santos and his wife, Stacey, as well as many nieces and nephews and their respective families. Calling hours for John will be held from 2 to 4p.m. on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee. Committal services at the MA Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam will be held at a later date. I knew John at Palmer High School. My memory of him was one day while a few of us were sitting at a lunch table in the cafeteria at PHS back in 1964 and how John and his friend Pete Warka were boasting to us how they both joined the Marines. I'm sorry for his loss.
