I met Jon in the late 1980s when he spent time with my staff at Grant Center Hospital in Miami Fl. Our psychiatrist Dr. Nowells brought John in as a consultant to a new program we were developing. He was besides being the most knowelegable addictions Psychiatrist I ever met -was by far the most gentle perceptive psychiatrist. What he imparted to us in a brief period shaped my approach in treating my dear patients and helped us create a program with a national reputation. You remained with...

I was a patient of Dr. Chappell's for a year as a student at the University of Chicago in 1965. He helped me immensely at that time. He was wise enough to let me sit silently through the entire session. An unusual practice but it was just what I needed to struggle with my demons in the safety of his office.
I have never forgotten him and the good he did me at that time. (I did finally learn to talk with him and that was the beginning of my improvement)
So sorry he his...

I met John Chappell at Parkdale Collegiate in 1949. Am sorry to hear of his passing. John was a fine man & although we were 4 grades apart, he treated me & every one he met as an equal.

Dearest Val and sweet family, I grabbed my cell phone to call Dr. Chappel today only to be reminded of his passing. He touched my life and the lives of others so deeply and it is so hard to remember he is above us running, smiling, and with other loved ones. My deepest sympathies to your family. I have found myself using the tools he taught me so much recently and am so thankful for the opportunity to have worked with him. I know time heals the pain of a lost one but know he will never be ...

Dear Val,
We met many years ago in a plane from Reno to Dallas (1996) and shared about our lives. I just found our correspondence of that time and learnt of the unfortunate passing of John; my deepest condolences for your loss. The celebration of life was most important in John's life, and my life was directly impacted by his work. For that I am very grateful.
Please let me know how you are at your convenience,

I just thought of John today and I did not know he passed. Now he is with all those great minds still teaching us. I worked for David Smith at the Physician's Training & Education Project of the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic. One of the things we did was to organize conferences on the matters of addiction, etc. John was my favorite speaker. He had the ability to draw you in and inform you about serious matters and made it so entertaining. I listened and watched carefully. He also...

Val, many years ago my husband and I took a dive trip to Tonga with you and John and the Doctor Fish group. I have never forgotten how wonderful the trip and the trainings were. John gave an amazing talk on Vincent Van Gogh through the lens of addiction. ( Did he ever write that up?) In the years since, I have taught more young therapists than I can count how to work with addiction and I give them all John's paper to physicians on the 12-steps. The addiction world was blessed by his presence...

Thank you everyone for your kind words about our dad and grandpa! It took us a long time to read these, so we hope you might check back in at some point. He meant the world to us, and it's very touching to know how he also helped others. Love,
