John Paul Cione

AGE: 82 •

John Paul Cione, Age 82. He died on June 30, 2016 in San Rafael, CA where he resided with his wife of 55 years, Roberta Irwin Cione. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Michael and Grace Cione, on Sept. 1, 1933.

John, aka 'Mr. C', is survived by his wife and 4 children: John Michael Cione of Solana Beach, CA, Robert Cione of Lavallette, NJ, Christine Cione of Novato, CA and Cindy Cione of Gualala, CA; his 6 grandchildren: Cassie, Coco, Cate, Lauren, Dylan and Sean; sister Connie Chille of Brooklyn, NY. and brother Frank Cione of Staten Island, NY. John grew up enforcing Brooklyn streets. He graduated from St. Francis College, served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps., and put himself through law school at St. John's University to become a respected Securities Law attorney on Wall Street. His career included working for the SEC, as general partner at Blythe Eastman Dillon & Company, as a member of both the NYSE and AMEX, as well as an attorney in the securities industry.

John lived and raised his family in Holmdel, NJ from 1970 - 1985, where he was reputable in the community as a champion coach for youth basketball, football, and softball teams. In 1985, John and Roberta moved to California seeking year-round sunshine, briefly living in Sausalito, then Santa Monica, they finally settled in Solana Beach for 25 years. For over 50 years his favorite time of year was summer at his home in Lavallette, NJ where his favorite pastimes included sailing his Hobie Cat from the beach, fishing, bbq'ing sausage and peppers for the neighborhood, swimming, and napping on the beach. He donned the unofficial title of 'Mayor' as he engaged with everybody. He also enjoyed vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for the past 28 years, where he and Roberta made lasting friendships. There he also was donned the 'Mayor'. More fishing, sunning, and fun! John "Cione the One and Only" was foremost a family man, and most loved having his family together. He worked hard to make that happen anywhere he was. His smile, exuberance, leadership and generosity will live on in the many people whose lives he touched.

The family will hold a memorial service at St. Pio of Pietrelcina in Lavallette, NJ on July 30, 2016 at 11:00 am. A Celebration of Life takes place afterward at 19 Ortley Ave in Lavallette. In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to Marin County Hospice by the Bay, www.hospicebythebay.org

Not sure what to say?

Toni & Bill

Dear Roberta and all your children and grandchildren - We just discovered that John is gone. We're terribly sorry to hear it. He was always so much fun, as well as kind, supportive, and smart. We always enjoyed seeing the two of you at SIA meetings, and even more going out to dinner with you near Solano Beach. Just a few days ago I was telling someone about the fig tree in your back yard! He was a wonderful man, and the two of you made a fabulous couple. Please accept our heartfelt...

He was as he called himself "The one and only" He will be missed

I miss my dad every day.
His memorial service in Lavallette, NJ was attended by about 150 people, many of whom traveled quite far to be there. Stories were shared I had never heard before. He has unforgettable entries in the storybooks of many lives, filling them them with advice, assistance, laughter, food and adventure.
Thanks to those who share stories of what an amazing force he was for his friends, colleagues and family.

Saddened to hear of John's death.
Always up-beat, always positive, always ready to help, always welcoming. He was so much more than a great neighbor to me on East 37th St.
A Friend, a mentor, a coach, a counselor, an employer ... John would find (or create!) a job for just about anyone who needed one.
John had a talent for making others feel special. He possessed a multi-million dollar smile! He was a son of Brooklyn .... And one the best Brooklyn has ever produced.

Dear Roberta and family,

I was so very sad to hear of John's passing.
It has been many, many years since we have been in touch.
My name is Marcella Ryan Sahni. John was a very special friend and neighbor. We - the Ryans were blessed to live across the street from John and Roberta . We lived there from 1962 - 68
What a great and giving and generous spirited person. He became close with my father and mentored my brother after my father's death in 1966. I will never forget...

Before time moves on I wanted to offer condolences to all the family of John Cione from all the Gavigan family. In golf terms John was a scratch human being. God bless! Susan and Owen

Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this time.
