M. John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains Obituary

John Lloyd Clement (Jack), 84, born in Rochester, NY passed away on August 17, 2019 in Pompton Plains, NJ after a long and valiant battle with Parkinson's Disease. He is survived by Anne, his beloved wife of 56 years. He and Anne moved to Pompton Plains from Akron, Ohio in 2015 to be closer to his daughter Rebecca (Pat Corless) Clement and cherished granddaughters Emma, Olivia and Juliet. Jack enjoyed nothing better than spending time with his granddaughters - playing games, attending their performances, taking them to every tourist attraction in northeast Ohio during their summer sojourns to "Camp Beaverbook," and teaching them how to use various power tools while constructing an elaborate model train table.

Jack earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida and his MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron. He enjoyed a 40-year career with The Babcock & Wilcox Company. After retiring in 1996, he established Clement Consulting, Inc. and spent the ensuing 13 years providing engineering and marketing services to the pulp and paper industry. He holds several boiler and process patents and published and presented twenty-two related technical papers in North America and internationally. Jack was involved in multiple industry associations and was particularly proud to receive, from the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, the honorary title of TAPPI Fellow in 2006 for "extraordinary technical contributions to the industry."

Although he traveled extensively for work and was sometimes away for weeks at a time, he still enjoyed vacationing with Anne to many US and international destinations. One of their cruises took them through the Panama Canal which sparked many memories of the six years that Jack spent in the Canal Zone as a teen.

Jack was an avid reader of history and mysteries. He was also an accomplished handyman and spent much time in his home workshop. He enthusiastically tackled new projects and completed all with his customary exacting precision.

Jack loved to study his family's genealogy, searching through paper census records and cemeteries long before the internet made such searches easily accessible. He traced one branch of his family back to their 1631 arrival in Massachusetts. He enjoyed the detective work of exploring the past and reading about the time and place in which his ancestors lived.

Jack was preceded in death by his sister Peggy Newton and brother Don Clement. He is survived by siblings Jerry (Marilyn), Susan, and James (Sandy).
