John Laurence Compton, 74, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away August 30, 2013, at his home. John was born in Manhattan, Kansas November 22, 1938 to Laurence and Bernice Compton. He attended Bluemont Elementary where he made many close friends that he kept for his entire life. He went to Manhattan High where he played the French horn and was an avid ham radio operator as a hobby. In 1962 John graduated with an engineering degree from Kansas State University and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He was a bartender at Kites during his college days before moving to Kansas City to work for Cutler Hammer and start a family. He eventually started his own company, Systems Manufacturing Inc. Most people will remember John as an incredibly loyal friend. He kept all his friends close for his entire life whether they were from school, work or the neighborhood. Many of us will remember John as an avid K-Stater and sports fan. He read many newspapers and later in life loved to write controversial letters to the editor. John enjoyed playing the piano, working on his model railroad, having lunch with his children and friends, and spending time with his grandkids. He loved to travel with his wife and take fishing trips with his friends. John enjoyed good conversation, a heated debate, and we have many stories of fun childhood pranks and antics from growing up in Manhattan. John always had a good time! John will be missed most by his family. He was a devoted husband who loved his wife deeply. He was the most caring and loving dad to his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife Diana, sister Jane Compton, children Lauren (David) Conderman and Brian (Denee) Compton, grandchildren Cole and Chase Conderman, Miles Compton, stepchildren Scott Middleton, Jessica Middleton, Chad Middleton, step-grandchildren Harry Disinger, Jackson Mills. John's favorite pastimes included flying his airplane and hanging out on his boat. He loved adventure and a fun time surrounded by friends and loved ones. We are sure he has found a beautiful lake somewhere and is waiting for all of us to join him. A private service will be held.
