John Charles Day

I have many fond memories of Dr. Day when I worked for St. Luke's Laboratory in the mid 70's. Dr. Day was very supportive of my husband, Don and I when we miscarried our first child. Then when our daughter was born, I believe your Sarah was born near the same time. We shared a great loss when Dea Nicholson passed away. Dr. Day taught me the meaning of Professional. I first met him when I interviewed for a job as Medical Technologist in 1979. He sat across the desk from me, looked me in the eye and asked, Are you good? I replied, somewhat shakily, I think so. And he replied, we'll find out Monday. He saw something in me that I didn't know I had; he forced me to reach out of my comfort zone and do more. He demanded 110% from each one of us in the lab and he insisted on absolute quality. I was a medical technology student 1978-79. Dr. Day was the most brilliant man I ever met. He was in so many ways responsible for the outstanding quality of laboratory services at St. Luke's.
I learned so many things about science and life from him. My deepest sympathies to the family.

I met Dr. Day as a young student in the medical technologist student program. He was smart, exacting and truly set the bar in laboratory excellence. My condolences to family and friends; I remember him with fondness and respect.

I first met Dr Day in 1974. I had the privilege of being mentored by him from 1976 to 1978 as a young medical technologist. He always had time to teach me and answer questions, even at 6:00AM! We bonded over our shared Kansas/Oklahoma backgrounds. He was an immaculate man and a slave to his profession. I remember his young children coming to the lab to do odd jobs. My dad did this with me and I gained so much from the experience as I am sure his kids did.

My thoughts are with you today Clara, and include all of your family during a time of grieving. My time spent working with John at St. Lukes ---also at leisure while golfing-- spring back again to me fresh and saturated with pleasure.
Those of us who worked with John to bring healing in the often course realm of sickness and suffering depended on his keen, detailed and exacting mind in Pathology.

I met John at St Luke's 40 some years ago. I was the telephone man at St Luke's then. He always had time to talk. He liked to get away from his microscope. I often think about him.

Please accept my condolences. Know that the God of comfort feel your pain and sorrow. Isaiah 61:1,2 reads: "He sent me (Jesus Christ) to bind up the brokenhearted, . . . and To comfort all who mourn, . . ."

John Day was an amazing man. Probably outside of my Dad, the hardest guy I ever worked with. Extremely demanding, very bright, very motivated, had a photographic memory. He hired me in 1984 at St Lukes in the Pathology department, I will be forever grateful. He has left a huge mark on the world he lived in. I wish all of his family peace in the days ahead, he will be missed. May he rest in peace.
