A life well lived. May all your memories of him be happy. Laurie Viscusi Connie Gander`s stepdaughter

When I was a LT, I was assigned to the Andrew Jackson in March 1985 to get submarine qualified as an engineering duty officer. John was the XO and due to a number of interesting circumstances I wound up serving as the ship's communicator. CDR (at that time) Demlein worked wonders with me to ensure the ship had a successful patrol cycle. We would also occasionally go round and round when one of the daily drills I planned and executed didn't go as planned...My heartfelt condolences to the...

My first engineer on Tullibee. John was an excellent Naval Officer, shiphandler, engineer, and person. May God bless his soul.

I was John's Executive Officer (XO) in Sculpin for the first half of his command tour. Our personal and professional outlook and persona meshed perfectly, allowing me to learn from him and apply what I learned not only on Sculpin but also in my later command tours. John taught me how to be a real "people person" - looking after the well-being of every crew member while demanding the utmost in attitude, devotion to each other as shipmates, and stellar professional performance.

To the Demlein Family and Friends -- I was so sorry to hear of CAPT John's passing. I had command of USS SAN JUAN (SSN-751) in Groton as part of CSG-2 from 1996-1999. I was honored to know and work with Captain Demlein, but even more honored to have the good Captain ride with us. A submariner of wisdom, drive, compassion and leadership who I was honored to know and host on my ship. The entire Submarine Force will miss him. v/r Joe Mulloy VADM USN (ret)

Rest in Peace Uncle JJ. I will fondly remember our conversations during Christmas at Pop Pop's and the 4th of July get togethers at the Lake. Also, I will never forget the mystic elves biscotti! Love you.
