I worked at Holland Home for about a year and John was by far my favorite resident I had. I loved going into his room talking about his life and journey in world war 2. I loved seeing his wife and how active and lively she still was. I am so sad to hear that he has passed.

John DeVries was my father-in-law, the best one could possibly hope for. When Pam and I were dating, she showed me a family picture, and I thought her dad looked mean and scary. I was afraid to meet him. Nothing could have been further from the truth. John DeVries was the sweetest man, the sweetest person, I have ever met in my life. I called him "Dad", as well as "Gumbari John". "Gumbari" is Sicilian for "Buddy", "Pal" (or in British English, "Mate"). Losing him was like losing...

I met Hilda and John at Sunshine Ministry Center when I moved back to GR to teach school in the late seventies. I met, esp, their children Mark and Pam. John and Hilda embraced me and invited me to their home. Hilda and I thought it was pretty funny to find another "Hilda". I thought a lot of Pam as well!
