Not sure what to say?

I am so so sorry to see this--I only found out that John died when I saw he hadn't opened the last couple of newsletters I sent, and he always opened them and often sent such kind words. I don't know why, but I searched for him on google after he didn't open the last newsletter, and I saw his obituary. We met at an airport, I don't remember which, maybe 5 years ago, we talked during our layover, had such a nice conversation, and stayed in touch over these last years-that just doesn't happen...

I was Prof. Dracup Ph.D. student at UCLA (1996-2001) and followed him as a post-doc at UC Berkeley (2001-2002). I am from Costa Rica. Prof. Dracup helped me in some may ways on my personal and academic career and inspired me to become a professor. He was an optimist and always remembered me the importance of persistence. He was an excellent mentor and person. I will keep a special memory of him. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Kathy and Family, Please accept my deepest condolences. I always call him Prof. DRACUP and I will do so. Our path crosses on April of 1989 at UCLA as he was my advisor for my PhD degree. He appeared to me as a gentleman, motivating and sincere person at the first times. Yes it is true but missing, I discovered that he was much more than those. He was not only a great scientist but also great fellow, mentor and guiding person. He encouraged me concentrate in the newly developing...

Kathleen - I am so sorry and we missed you two from the moment you left San Francisco. John happened to sit next to me on his first visit to the Rotary Club of San Francisco. He had a pork pie hat on looking altogether professorial. When he said he was and at the University of California, as a Cal grad, we became immediate friends. And John loved to serve humanity and had special knowledge and skills. And bless him for mentoring so many students. There are few who served so well, and lived so...

Kathleen and Family so sorry that we lost John. I looked up to him as a senior colleague and more importantly a friend as I was cutting teeth in research related to climate and hydrologic variability over North America; John was a forerunner in this important arena. besides his scientific curiosity and acumen, what i will always remember about John is his kind, generous encouragement of students and younger scientists. Kathleen, I remember meeting you at one or more of the...

Dear Jan, Please accept my deepest condolences on your father´s departure, water is life, his legacy will be forever throughout centuries. You must be so proud of your amazing father and his accomplishments. Stay well, Much love

John will be sorely missed in the halls of UC Berkeley, where his good cheer and his innovative thinking endeared him to colleagues and students. John mentored me kindly when I was new faculty, and always had a joke to share! His book is quite helpful to our students as they build towards a better world, and will continue to teach and inspire for many more years!

Dear Kathy and family, My sincere condolences. John was a wonderful advisor to me at Berkeley and always encouraged me to do my best. I loved how personable he was, hosting those wonderful dinners in San Francisco or enjoying time with his group. I will miss him and his light. Please take care.

Dear Kathy and Dracup family members, I remember John from my days as a new faculty member at UCLA. John was also encouraging and I appreciated his and Kathy's hospitality. My sincere condolences.
