Not sure what to say?

Hard to believe he has been gone for a year. 'Gentleman John' I'm always proud to say I server under him at CPL. He was more than a librarian and a bibliophile: he was model as to how people should conduct themselves in a civil society. Hope we'll meet again on the other side.

John was a fearless and efficient leader of CPL for my entire time serving on the Library Board. I learned so much from him about how libraries actually work in the service of the public. Much of this knowledge transferred into my daily work life. I know that he had a positive influence on countless others as well. Condolences to family on his passing.

A wonderful article in the Calgary Herald on John. He left a great legacy in Calgary!

Dear Carolyn and Corrinne and families,
My Dad, Sydney Bell was a long-time friend of your father's. He enjoyed speaking to him on the phone every few days for the past few months and wanted to pass on his sincere sympathies and condolences to you. I also remember your Dad - visited him and your Mom in Victoria a number of years ago. Please know that we remember him fondly and that we are thinking of you.

PS I'm sure that my Dad would love to correspond with...

I was so sorry to hear that John had died. He was the Director of the Calgary Public Library when I was Chairman of the Library Board. I admired him greatly and loved working closely with him. I also admired his devotion to his lovely wife. We kept in touch for several years after he retired. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Your Dad gave me my first opportunity as a librarian, hiring me from UBC along with 4 of my classmates! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working in Calgary and often remember Mr. Dutton with great affection. He was a wonderful mentor and encourager of new professionals, helping us develop our understanding and passion through meaningful and challenging opportunities. I hope that it is a comfort to you, knowing the positive impact he has had on so many in our...

John was a man of principle and integrity. His faith mattered deeply to him, and as he aged he found great solace and comfort in the care of the spirit--both that which he offered, and that which he greatly received. He loved to reflect and debate issues of church and society. He was a good man and a dear friend. My love are with his family.

So sorry to hear of John's passing. He was a mentor when I started as a Chief Librarian, and someone for whom I had both great respect and great liking.

Sad news indeed - my sympathies to you and your family.
I met John many years ago through Leighton McCarthy (my ex but we're great friends) and enjoyed many evenings with John and Helen. Thought go out to you.
