Not sure what to say?

Before Katrina, I was a regular listener of his show and I have at least one recording of it. Johnny's enthusiasm was infectious. I remember fondly his promotion of acts at the Rock 'N Bowl and his signature "Johnny can't dance" I'm 17 years too late, but I Googled him and am sorry I was far too late to pay my respects. It took me almost 5 years in "exile" in Atlanta before I could even listen to music without bursting into tears. Living in NOLA as long as I did, music was a huge part of...

My life it better for having met and worked with Johnny. I am sad to hear of his passing. An e-mail from Hazel let me know. Since then I have often looked here to see what others have written and to think about what I could add. I wonder what ever happened to Johnny's audition tape for WWOZ. It would be a collectors item, I tell you right now. I am very moved to see that the family has chosen to ask for donations to WWOZ. Johnny gave so much already.

I've been gone from my beloved NOLA for 3 years now but have remained a loyal WWOZ listener. I am shocked and terribly saddened to hear the news about Johnny. He would always brighten up my Sundays and I looked forward to hearing his voice. I would have to translate for my non Cajun friends. Requiem en Pace

Johnny was a great gift in this life and has taken his fais do-do to heaven. He now dances with the angels.

Having lived in New Orleans for four years during medical school, many DJ's on WWOZ brought me solace, laughter, and good fun. Johnny was special. In person at the station. At Bruce's Fais-do-do at Tipitina's. And of course, on the air. I am very sad to hear of his passing. I miss him and his amazing ability to keep those records of old spinning.

Larry and I came to realize what a great down to earth understanding Johnny held of music, people, and the world. You couldn't fool Johnny. If it wasn't straight he wouldn't go for it. His love of the music, his perseverance and his speaking the truth are examples for all of us. Thank you Johnny, thank you Mama Fasullo for all those years of work and fun. We will miss you.

Just the thought of Johnny brings a smile to my face. I used to follow his time slot at WWOZ. As a radio host he was at once laughable and loveable, infuriating and inviting but always full of fun and mischief. He was an artist and a kind-hearted soul with a child’s eyed view of the world. His jokes were old and stale but he served them up like they were fresh from the oven. A sweet man. I miss him. My thoughts go out to his family and his beloved mother.

I spent over a year following Johnny on the air and in the studio on Sunday afternoons and I can honestly say I'm a better person for having met him. It's hard to take yourself too seriously after spending a few minutes with Johnny; his excitement, innocence and smile were contageous. My condolences go out to all his family and friends.

Johnny embodied the spirit of WWOZ -a truly original personality, set free to share the music he loved with the world. And that world embraced him all the more for it.
