Sheldon T. Banks Funeral Chapel Obituary

FLETCHER, Mr. John Lewis.-age 97, of Flint, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Family hour will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Word of Life Christian Church, 460 W. Atherton Rd. Flint, MI. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:30 am. Public visitation will be on Friday, November 7, 2014 from 10am-6pm at Serenity Funeral Chapel, 2340 W. Carpenter Rd., Flint, MI 48505. The final resting place for Mr. Fletcher will be RiverRest Cemetery, Flint, MI.

John was born on August 4, 1917 in Tarry, Arkansas. He was 2nd eldest of six children born to Lewis and Cherry (Richardson) Fletcher. John accepted Christ at an early age. He received his education at Mount Olive School in Lincoln County, Tarry Arkansas. In his youth, he was a very good baseball player. He relocated to Michigan in 1954. He retired from GM Buick Motor Division in 1987 at the age of 70.

He and his lovely bride, Alzie, raised and educated 14 children, as well as numerous grandchildren. He was an outspoken, godly man who lived a life of integrity before God. He valued hard work and education and led by example. John was a man of many talents. He was a creative person skilled at carpentry, backyard mechanics, plumbing, and electrical wiring. He taught all of his children to be self-sufficient in all of these areas and to seek higher education with hard work and determination. He was a very sharp-minded, active 97 year old who was independent and active up until a few days before his departure.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his dearest sister with whom he shared a very close relationship, Freddie Mae Rollins of Pine Bluff, AR; children, Mildred Jean Johnson of Mt Morris, MI, Lee (Lorna) Fletcher of Battle Creek, MI; Carlis (Steve) Logan, Lenora Reyes, and Diane Fletcher of Flint, MI; Madeline Fletcher of Clio, MI; Erich Fletcher and Ron Wright of McHenry, IL; Fred (Kim)Fletcher of Holly, MI; Jackie (Ron)King of Swartz Creek MI; grandchildren, Kenneth (Brenda) Johnson, LeSha Tanimowo, Sandra (William) Byrd, Latrece Fletcher, Erica Fletcher, and David Fletcher, Ebone Fletcher all of Flint, MI; Carmen Fletcher Schreane of Chattanooga, TN; Valentina (James) Wilson of Redford, MI; Kendra (Terrence) Woodbury, of Clinton, MD; Kwamise Fletcher of Fresno, CA; Kevin Worthy of Detroit, MI; Landon Fletcher of Irving, TX; Danielle King of Swartz Creek, MI; and Emmanual Fletcher of Holly, MI; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by: parents, Lewis and Cherry Fletcher; grandparents, Joe and Ordila Richardson; grandparents, Jerry and Mahaly Fletcher; wife, Alzie Lee Fletcher; siblings, Louise Hunter, Jeremiah Fletcher, Frankie Mae Fletcher, and James Fletcher; children, John Fletcher Jr, Melvin Fletcher, Dr. Evelyn Harris Head, Dewayne Fletcher, Floyd Fletcher and granddaughter, Delores (Lolo) Johnson.

The family expresses great gratitude to the staff at Genesys Convalescence Home, Hospice Advantage staff--especially Keisha Hunter, whom he was very fond of and Dr. Kelvin Callaway, who cared for our loved one during his illness. May the grace and favor of God forever rest upon you.
