John was my close friend growing up. He was funny, loyal and real. He was a thinker, the closest thing to a philosopher that I've known. Even back in junior high school, he would have us looking at ideas from different perspectives and would challenge us to think more deeply. He encouraged me in many ways, to make friends with people I would not have otherwise known, to become involved in sports, to consider higher education.
