Barto Funeral Home - Spring Valley Obituary

John Paul Frey, 76, resident of Port Charlotte, FL and formerly of the Illinois Valley, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2022, in Tampa, FL.

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial visitation for John will be held at the Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, on Thursday, December 29, from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM, with a brief funeral service beginning at 2:30 PM.  Private burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Bureau.

John was born in Spring Valley on May 29, 1946 to John A. and Gladys A.(Pople) Frey. John first married Mary Louise Castaneda on October 26, 1968.  He then later married Janice Kreskowski on May 25, 1990.

John graduated from Hall High School and then attended St. Bede Junior College.  He was a fun, loving, handsome guy and he loved to make people laugh, whether it was funny or not.  He loved his family and life!  He also enjoyed sports.  He played baseball and football while in school.  In his young adult life, he was a pitcher on a fast-pitch softball team.  He was requested to travel to many states to play.  He wanted to play professionally until an injury.  At one time he was asked to pitch against the King and his Court, which consisted of only one pitcher and three players.  They had never lost a game.  At the time, John was the only pitcher to have forced the King and his Court into extra innings.  It was a great achievement for John.  Additionally, John loved playing catch with his daughters, and they adored him.  As little girls they always wanted to hang out with him.

John had worked at Cassiday’s in Spring Valley, Electrolux in LaSalle, and was owner of his own business, Convenient Cleaning, in Peru.  He continued to work in Sales and Management at Met Life Insurance until his retirement.  In his spare time, John continued to follow his nieces and grandchildren’s high school and college sports careers.  Everyone loved John, and he always brought a smile to those around him.  We thank him for our time together.  He will remain forever in our hearts.  Until we meet again.

John is survived by his spouse, Janice Kreskowski, of Rotonda West, FL; his daughters, Janelle (Timothy) Petersen of Spring Grove, IL, Janette (Brent) Sherman of Plainfield, IL, and Brittany (Troy) Zander of Woodridge, IL; his step-daughter, Renee (Mark) Robbins of Port Charlotte, FL; his grandchildren, Andrew Duchaine, Courtney (Andy Hanus) Duchaine, Jacob and Peyton Petersen, Justin and Jordan Sherman, Loren (Sean Jr.) Hughes, Rebecca Robbins, and Kinzie Zander; his brother, Jim (Diane) Frey of Joliet, IL; and his nieces, Bethany (Bo) Adeoli of Yorkville, IL and Jackie (Matt) Navas of Plainfield, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Jaden Ryan Sherman.

Not sure what to say?

My deepest condolences to John's family and his spouse Janice for their loss. John was a great guy. I worked with John at Cassiday/Cosgrove way back in the late 60's. John was a fun loving guy even back then. I lost track of John when I left for the army and always wondered what happened to him. It's sad to read his obit and know that such a wonderful, loving, caring, and fun gut has left thus life. I can only say that John's passing leaves this world a sadder place to live in, but a much...
