Mr. John Fuchs' death hurts deeply. He inspired me, when I was uninspirable and he challenged me when I was unchallengeable (because of Mr. Fuchs I checked and it is a word). I graduated as an English major in 2005 mostly because of him and I plan on using that degree writing. I regret not letting him know how much of an influence he had over me.

John Fuchs was an original. As his colleague on the DLS faculty, I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know him and appreciate his dedication and unique perspectives on life and teaching. His students loved him unconditionally. He taught both of my sons (Greg '98 and Matt '01) and imparted to them his love of literature. Matt majored in English in college in no small measure due to the inspiration of John Fuchs. Our thoughts, prayers and memories go out to the Fuchs family. Rest in peace.

Mr. Fuchs was a mentior both in and out of the classroom. He reached so far beyond Room 10, that for a brief period in the late 90's he, I, and Adam C. had a coffee house band. We jammed and practiced from time to time with Mrs. Vickie, always cheering us on. I'll never forget the time we played at the Neutral Ground, it's a landmark in my life. Mr. Fuchs guided me through the fear of singing & playing in public and to this day those lessons are not forgotten. Thank you Mr. Fuchs for being...

To all of the extended Fuchs family I would like to express my deepest condolences for the loss of John.
I had the pleasure of taking Senior English with Mr Fuchs a year earlier than the rest of my class at De La Salle. As a result I was required to do an independent study of English for my senior year. Even with an impossible work load John made it fun. Reading matched with neighborhood walks around the uptown campus where he would give me 'botanical tours of New Orleans.' ...

I have so many fond memories of my classes with Mr. Fuchs. He was not only a great teacher, but also a wonderful person. I was lucky to be able to spend two years of my high school career with him in my life. Being quiet and on the shy side, Mr. Fuchs embraced me with his warm personality when I transferred to De La Salle my junior year. I will always remember his contagious laugh, wonderful smile, and mischievous eyes. Mr. Fuchs will be missed by so many, but I feel lucky to have had the...

I have been so blessed to have had Mr. Fuchs as an an English teacher. I worked on the literary magazine with him and we had such a fun time. He was definitely one in a million -- a great teacher, a friend, and an inspiration to many.

Since I heard the news I've heard John and myself singing. I remember when he wrote "Air of Promise" about Vickie.
"You hear the sound of voices calling your name
You see the crowds of faces
no two the same
You breathe the air of promise
standing in the rain
You feel the touch of love
ending your pain"
One of John's favorite topics was nature, and he wrote about it endlessly. One of my favorites was "Highway 14," a tune he wrote about a trip he took to the...

Out sympathies go out to the Fuchs family. Mr. Fuchs was one of the few teachers that made a lasting impact on each and every student. I am truly thankful for having the opportunity to learn in his classroom.
