            John M. Gallagher, of Sellersville, PA, passed away of cardiac arrest on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospital.  He was 97.


            He was the husband of 51 years of the late Catherine G. (Brown) Gallagher until her passing on October 19, 2005.


            Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Leo and Catherine (Conway) Gallagher. 


            A U. S. Merchant Marine Veteran of World War II, Mr. Gallagher served as a Merchant Mariner with the Seafarers International Union of North America for 45 years until retiring in 1986.


            He was a long-time member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville, PA.


            Mr. Gallagher was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 1539, Sellersville, where he was active with the Raccoons Club.  A military history buff, he especially enjoyed reading and gardening.


            He is survived by three sons, John M. Gallagher and his wife Maureen, of Valley Lee, MD, Peter L. Gallagher and his wife Eloise, of San Diego, CA, and Leo R. Gallagher and his wife Susan, of Brigantine, NJ; nine grandchildren, Jacklyn, Megan, Kerri Leigh, Ciaran, Michael, Brian, Seamus, Daniel, and Allison; and five great-grandchildren.  In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo, Francis and Vincent Gallagher, and a sister, Patricia Gallagher.


            His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 N. Main Street, Sellersville, PA, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 10:45 AM.  Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

As a Sister of Saint Joseph, I considered Jack as part of our family since our Sistets cared for him at Saint John’s Orphanage in Philadelphia until his adolescence. These early years shaped Jack’s strong sense of responsibility to his family and desire to serve others. I loved sitting with Jack and listening to the inspiring stories about his experiences in the Merchant Marines. My favorite one was him meeting Mother Teresa on the docks and “helping her out” a phrase he used frequently. ...

There was no finer a gentleman than Mr. Gallagher. Talking with him was a treat/treasure that we will never forget. His kindness was our pleasure, always asking and speaking about ours and his family. He was truly a blessing for us all. We'll pray for him and his family, knowing that he is now at peace and watching over us all. God Bless Him.

John played pinochle at my house the Monday before he passed away. John Bergen was his partner. Angie and I tried to beat them. But the 2 John's were unstoppable! We laughed a lot.
