John Garst was a good man and teacher. Rest in peace.

I first met John when he and I were both students at Spring Hill College. I enjoyed attending Mass at the Brothers' chapel. He was friendly, smiled a lot and always a good story or two about a professor or a class we had both taken. Later, he moved to New Orleans and so did I. We had several mutual friends and we attended some of the same get-togethers. New Orleans is a food city for sure. I taught with John at Jesuit in the 1990s. He was an outstanding teacher and an even better man. May he rest in peace.

A man who truly found his vocation in teaching, and by the sheer grace of God was I blessed to find myself in his class as a Freshman in high school. Having missed a week of classes, out with the flu or some such malady, I was totally lost (thanks to dear Pattie (Slattery) Burke for that expression) and approached him in the Math department office with a great deal of trepidation.
