John (Gerald) Hayes
February 26th, 1950 – January 9, 2024
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Hayes of Marysvale, at the Carbonear General Hospital, on January 9th, 2024, in his 73rd year.
Pre-deceased by his parents: John and Ellen Hayes (Rose); special brother and best friend Reg Hayes; brother-in-law Paul O’Neill; nephew Perry Gillard; father and mother-in-law: Leo and Eileen Shea (Bartlett); brother-in-law Bill Shea; nephew Trenton McCarthy; niece Arlene Ryan; and sister-in-law Margaret Shea.
Leaving to mourn his loss with cherished and precious memories his loving and devoted wife Joan; his daughters: Geraldine (Kurt), and Joanne (Kristopher); and his son John (Katie and her daughter Hilary); two grandsons that he adored Johnathan and Nathan. Also, leaving to mourn his brothers: James (Bernice), Leo (Patsy), William (Bev); sisters: Margaret (Raymond), Mary (Tom), and Mildred (Billy); sisters and brothers-in-law: Christine, Marg (Aiden), Carmel (Jerome), Susan (Dave), Leo, Ann Marie, Mick (Cathy), Tom (Joanne), Jerry and their families. Also, special neighbours Roger and Bonita, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends near and far.
Gerald was a jack of all trades, proud husband, father and poppy who defined himself by his family. His strong work ethic was instilled in him at an early age as he worked side by side with his mom tending to the stables, gardens and getting firewood. As an adult he continued with his strong work ethic starting a sawmill business and eventually moving into the construction business. His second love outside his family was his backhoe with an unmatched ability to move this large machine into the smallest of places. He passed on his skills to his son John who continues working in the trade to this day.
You are not with us now, but your memories will always be with us. Your lessons will always guide us, and your smile will always be remembered. You are going to be missed forever.
Special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at Carbonear General Hospital who went above and beyond during this difficult time. Your kindness and professionalism was very much appreciated and will be forever remembered.
Resting at Flaherty's Memorial Funeral Home, 70 Conception Bay Highway, Conception Harbour, with visitation on Thursday, January 11th, from 10:00am - 9:00pm, and Friday, January 12th, from 10:00am-9:00pm.
