Very kind, a great culture, ope level higher than in most people I met. His work started my own work in variable metric methods, when I collaborated with Broyden... we met in Stanford, 1976, and we wrote a joint paper on optimal conditioning of variable metric methods.... months before his demise I was surprised he was still alive in Mountain View... tried unsuccesfully to get in touch with him.
