John Harris Obituary

SAN ANGELO John Harris took his last breath on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. John was born on April 4, 1945, to Leon and Argie Harris in Dallas, Texas. He enlisted in the Navy in 1962. He was stationed in Long Beach, Calif., on the USS Bayfield and served two tours in the Vietnam War. While on leave, he met the love of his life, Joyce Rezzlle. They married May 23, 1964. He will be remembered most by his expertise in diesel mechanics. He worked for several tractor dealerships, the one he enjoyed the most was Porter Henderson Implement Company. He met many of his closest friends while working there. His dream was to own his own company. That dream came true when he opened San Angelo Diesel Injection Services Inc., which he owned and operated for 30 years. Upon selling his company he enjoyed selling ranch real estate for Dierschke and Dierschke. He was forced to retire after being diagnosed with cancer in 2009. For the last 2-1/2 years you could find him sitting out in his barn, reading his books with his most loyal friend, Tip, and visiting with neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Argie Harris; and son Chet Dee Harris. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Marie Harris of Paint Rock; daughter Tammie Hohensee and husband Mike of Miles; Charles Harris and wife Yvonne of San Angelo; his pride and joys, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brandon Hohensee and wife Melissa, their children, Carter and Hadley, Laryn Gibson and husband Robert Paul, their children, Taylor and Taytum, Travis Hohensee; brothers Jearl Harris, Jerry and Kay Harris, Joe and Geneva Harris; sisters Oleta and Ernest Harrel, Joyce Fay Waskom; and many nieces and nephews and friends. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Johnson's Funeral Home with burial to follow in Concho Cemetery in Paint Rock. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of San Angelo, House of Hope, Girls Home and MD Anderson. Family and friends can sign the online register book at johnsons-funeralhome.com.

Mrs. Harris, this is Brandon Fava (Jerry's grandson). I just wanted you to know that not only me, but my entire family are going to miss him. He was always so nice to me and joked with me. He was kind of like an extra grandpa. Thank you for sharing him with me. I will always have a special place in my heart for him. I will never forgot him. We had an inside joke about me target practicing on his cats. He made me smile.
Love, Brandon Fava

My life was enriched daily because I could call John Harris my friend. To know John was to love him, but even beyond love and friendship, he was a Christian man of wisdom, kindness, and character, for he was no mere man, he was a giant filled with goodness and humility. Rest in peace,John Harris, for you will always be part of who we became because we knew and loved you.

My prayers go out to Joyce and the rest of John's family. We had lots of laughs growing up. We were in the same classes in school and both of us were just a little bit ornary, but that goes with our bloodline. Loving people and always willing to lend a helping hand was also some of our family traits. Johnny, as I always called him, was a good man, a hard working man, and a man who loved his family and friends. I was always proud of the man he became. Even though we didn't get to see each other often after we grew up, I will miss him, but we will see each other again one day. Love you!

John was a man you took pride in calling friend. He would never hesitate helping anyone, and took pleasure in doing it. We will miss John coming by Miles, not only to enjoy his friendship, but to laugh and share stories, many of which will be repeated with fond memories. The world would be a better place with more men like John, my friend.
