As a newly arrived San Franciscan (1987) I asked about for the "best mens' store" in Portland...and all told me it was John Helmer's. And over the years, it was such a pleasure to see John ... as dapper as ever ... walking the streets in a straw hat for summer and nice Dobbs in winter. Aside from my personal needs (short brim Dobbs to match a new suit that John convinced me as the best fit as the best price), I was in desperate need one rather cold winter for warm head gear for my police...

Hello Beverly and Family,
It is with regrets I send this message. I am out of town and will not be able to attend John's memorial service. Our friendship goes back from John's and Bill's student days at the University of Oregon. There have been many wonderful memories to shared through the years. These are our treasures.
It can truly be said of John, " His was a life well lived."

John was a friend of my father's, John Linde, who also was a marathoner and great man full of uncommon integrity. I miss my dad very much. I enjoyed reading about John when I saw his obituary in September. My father passed on September 17, 1991, my mother passed on September 19, 2002. Sorry for the loss of your wonderful John.
