John M Howard MD of Toledo, Ohio died peacefully Wednesday March 16. He was 91 years old and a native of Alabama. He was a mentor, teacher, writer, distinguished colleague and researcher at the Department of Surgery at the University of Toledo. He visited 80 countries on all seven continents, often as a visiting professor, lecturer or surgical mentor. He was an avid gardener and birdwatcher. During the Korean War, Dr Howard directed the U.S. Army's Surgical Research Team which pioneered the MASH unit for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit by order of President Dwight D Eisenhower. Dr Howard and his late wife, Nina Abernathy Howard have six children 10 grand children and six great grandchildren. He is survived by Sarah Shepherd Rice Howard of Toledo whom he married after Nina's death, his sister Mary Louise Jones of Birmingham, Alabama, and his children John jr (Patsy) of Houston, Texas, Robert F. of Galveston, Texas, Nina (Mick) Oakley of Penfield, NY, George (Eileen) of Columbus, Ohio, Susan Howard (Mark Weihs) of Perrysburg, OH, and Laura (Tim) Hickey of Toledo, Ohio, . Friends are invited to join the family in a funeral service, burial, and lunch at Hope United Methodist Church in Whitehouse on Monday March 21 beginning at 10:30 am. Visitation will be Sunday March 20 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Peinert Funeral Home, 6603 Providence Street, Whitehouse, OH. The family has suggested donations to the John M Howard, Endowed Professorship of Surgery Fund at the University of Toledo College of Medicine.
