John P. Huizinga formerly of Mount Prospect John P. Huizinga, 84, passed away peacefully on Nov. 8, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn; daughter, Anne (David) Pratt; and granddaughters, Emily and Catherine. As a high school teacher and guidance counselor for 31 years at Maine...
I just saw this news. Mr. Huizinga was my guidance counselor in C-108 from 1974-78. He was lively and funny--a person who both challenged and cared for you--and I remember him very fondly.

John Huizinga was a true inspiration. He was my Government teacher at Maine (East) in 1957(my senior year). John went the extra mile and then some with me. I went on to earn top grades in his class, and eventually I became a High School teacher myself. With my own students I tried to model John's compassion and humor, and I hope I got it right. In any event, John not only helped me, but the many students I taught in a long educational career. God bless and keep him...he was a graet man.

"HiZ" was our nickname for John. He made government interesting for me. He was not only my teacher, but was a friend of our family. HiZ was like a big brother to me. He and Marilyn spent many wonderful times together with our family. I always remember his smile and joy for living. May we all be blessed in remembering the fond times we spent with him.

My. Huizinga worked with my Dad Charles Foreman at Maine East. He was such a great help to my Dad when he had his two strokes and was diagnosed with Parkinson's. He helped my Dad out tremendously with his calls and visits. Will be sorely missed. Nancy Foreman

I kind of feel lost here. I was Maine East Class of 1960, My brother Bill Class of 1955. I asked him if I was dreaming and he said "no" he was a great teacher. I will have to to back to yearbooks, but I still have such a warm memory. God take care of a great teacher. John V. Hahn & Brother Bill.

Mr. Huizinga was a very nice man. A graduate of Maine South in 1967 - I regret I didn't benefit by his wisdom, personally, but my sister ( Karen) had Mr. Huizinga for a teacher when she was at Maine East. She always had such kind things to say. Heaven will benefit by such a fine teacher. RIP

Sincere condolences to John's wife and daughter. What a personal pleasure it was to have had a few moments with John last month at the play house in Palatine. Past memories of teaching with him were heart-warming .

When I found out that Mr. Huizinga had passed away, I was deeply saddend. He was not only my homeroom counselor (C-108) at Maine South, but a good friend of mine! I graduated in 1974. He touched my heart and all of his students before and after me. After graduating high school I kept in contact with him through the years. When my mother died, he was the first person at her wake! He was a very special person: thoughtful, warm, caring and quite funny!! John I will miss you very much! I promise...
