John Jenkins Obituary

John Michael Jenkins IV

Montgomery - John Michael Jenkins IV was born in Montgomery AL in 1942 to Carolyn Cooper and John Michael Jenkins III. He was the beloved step-son of William Micou Jordan. Mike died in Montgomery, AL on March 27, 2021. Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife Kent Callaway Jenkins and his children Carolyn Jenkins Dennard of Savannah, GA. Mike Jenkins of Montgomery, Kent Noltes of St. Simons, GA, and Peyton Thompson (Tommy) of Savannah, GA. Mike was the loving grandfather of Cooper and Rivers Hall, Wynn and Bluford Dennard, Anne Mallory and Hayes Jenkins, Nicholas, Margo and Emmie Noltes, and Thomas and Rogan Thompson. He is also survived by his sisters Jane Barganier of Montgomery and Carolyn Branch of Atlanta and his brother Bill Jordan of Healdsburg CA, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A graduate of Washington and Lee University, Mike then served two years in Korea as a Second Lt. in the US Army and returned to Montgomery to build up the family Jenkins Brick Company. He was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor for his achievements in the industry. Mike was a "man among men" and his survivors, his many friends, business associates and the Montgomery Community will long remember his legacy. As a lifelong resident of Alabama, Mike worked to make our city and state a better place by co-founding both Leadership Montgomery and Leadership Alabama in an effort to bring potential and active leaders of both races together to work for a better future. His commitment was recognized by his receiving the "Martin Luther King Award" presented to him personally by Coretta Scott King. He also chaired a successful United Way Campaign; served as Chairman of the Board of Montgomery Academy and was Chapter Chairman of the Southeast Young Presidents Organization. A Memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, March 30th at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. John Leach officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike's YPO Forum and the members of the "Montgomery Thirteen" (both groups close to his heart), Frank Johnston, Jim Marshall and Bob Young. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church 113 Madison Ave, Montgomery 36104 or to the charity of your choice.

Mike epitomized what a great citizen to any community does . He showed us all how to be positive, respectful and strategic in so many worthy pursuits in a wide array of business , civic and charitable causes . His values never wavered and his kindness towards all was unfailing . When I met Mike in 1989 we were friends in minutes and that blessing continued through the years . My thoughts and prayers to Kent and family .

Although I haven't seen Mike in may years, that didn't mean from time to time when I would read and article or see his name pop up in some business communication that I wouldn't immediately smile and think back to my youth. I grew up on Thomas Ave just down from Huntingdon College, and Mike and his family were around the corner neighbors for many years. Our old gang of kids used to play touch football, and a little baseball in the Jordan/Jenkins front yard and do all the things that young kids did back then. I thought Mike was one of the coolest guys going. and remember him very fondly. After service I returned to Montgomery and worked directly under Mike's step father Bill Jordan for a number of years at First Alabama/Real Estate Financing Inc.. I would see Mike from time to time, and you could always tell, this was a guy that had his act together, but was really just a genuinely fine man and good human being. I know his family will miss that charming smile and the sweet presence he brought to a room. The City of Montgomery will miss a fine citizen and leader. I am proud to have known Mike Jenkins.

Mike Jenkins was one of the kindest men I have ever met. I was blessed to be a part of the Brick Industry Association Board of Directors where he served for many years. He was always an encourager and mentor to me and always made time for others. Our industry was much better because of his servant leadership.
