Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home Obituary

John H. Jones, of Gravel Pond, formerly of Scranton, died peacefully Monday morning at home with family present.  He was the widower of Judith Asch Jones, who died on September 16, 2019.

Born in Scranton, John was the son of the late Dr. C. Henry and Mary R. Jones.  Prior to his retirement, he was an electrician for IBEW Local 81 for nearly forty years. He was proud of his work as a trainman on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.  He was a 1968 graduate of Central High School, where he was on the swim team, and attended Keystone Junior College.  John had an encyclopedic knowledge of the world of sports, and he dutifully followed his beloved Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, Penn State football and Syracuse basketball.  John was a history buff and avid reader.  He was a kind and gentle man, the type of person that everyone enjoyed to sit and talk to. John enjoyed skiing and bowling for many years, and he built his dream house at Gravel Pond where he immensely enjoyed the natural beauty and wildlife. He was a wonderful loving husband, father, and grandfather. John was a lifelong member of United Baptist Church of Scranton.

Surviving are two daughters, Tara B. Jones and her fiancé Steve Kane, Long Beach, CA, and Dallas W. Jones and her husband, Peter Karel, Larkspur, CA; two grandsons, Hudson Wilder Karel and Rowan Banks Karel; two sisters, Helen Jones and Ann Weigle, both of Washington State, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Home Instead for their care and compassion over the last few months.

A private funeral will be held with interment in the Abington Hills Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lackawanna River Conservation Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit.

Not sure what to say?

I came to know John first as a classmate at Central High school and then as my brother-in-law because he married my dear sister-in-law Judi Asch. We shared so many special times with John and Judi and families prior to moving to Arizona. In all the years I knew John I never heard a mean word from him he was not only kind and gentle but so intelligent, tender and loving and without opinionated views on anyone! Always a smile and warm hug when we all got together and so much to talk about. John...

A classmate at Central High School, Class of 1968, John was one of the kindest, gentlest, and fun-loving persons I ever met. My sympathies to his family on such a tremendous loss. May he rest in peace.

Hello Uncle John, it’s been an absolute honor to be your nephew! Even though, as adults, we hadn’t really seen other too much over the yearsI, as the oldest nephew of Aunt Judy, remember doing sooooo many things with you as a child. Thanks so much for your kindness, great talks about History, sunny and positive disposition , and warmth. I have many truly wonderful memories of you. I’ll never forget the Phillies game you took me to. We took the bus I think. And seeing all those late 70’s...

You will always remain in my heart. Love you forever Daddy ❤

Thank you John for being a fun, caring and devoted brother. Thinking back on the many experiences we enjoyed together during our childhood and beyond fills me with love for you. You carried on the tradition in our family of being there for your family and extended family, I will miss knowing you are just a phone call away. But you will always be in my heart. I will miss you John.

My brother John -

Much loved and will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

RIP dear J.J. ... you were one of the very special ones!

Johnny Jones.... one of the best human beings this planet has ever seen. It's an honor to have known and worked with him. Even though he isn't here - his presence will always be. Guys like JJ never die, they live forever in the hearts of all who loved him..

Dear Tara and Dallas. Please accept our deepest condolences. Those we hold closest to our hearts never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they have shared and the love they brought into our lives. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
