He is further survived by his cherished grandchildren Ian, Cullen and Tea Kampine; Alex, Grace and Tess Talbot; Eli and Benjamin Kampine; Jack and Olivia Kampine. Survivors include his siblings Patricia (Paul) Wenninger, Robert (Sue) Kampine and Eileen Thompson. Also lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Peter J. Kampine, his sister Mary Ellen Dorzeski, and his parents Clifford Kampine and Florence Kampine Saltz. John Kampine was raised in Marathon, Wisconsin where his father was a general practitioner and his mother was a registered nurse. He graduated as valedictorian of his high school class where he was a Wisconsin All-state football player and high school All-American. He attended the University of Notre Dame and Marquette University on football scholarships. In 1958, he married Susie and they started a family in 1959. He received his medical degree from Marquette University Medical College (now the Medical College of Wisconsin) in 1961. He returned to graduate school at Marquette where he received a Ph.D. in Physiology, then continued research training as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He returned to Milwaukee to complete a residency program in Anesthesiology in 1967. To his family, he was husband, father, brother, son, uncle and Grandpa, but to his peers, he was a healer, a scholar, and a scientist. During his residency, he taught in the physiology department that led to a life-long dedication to teaching. He was a faculty member in both the Anesthesiology and Physiology departments at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Under his guidance, he developed the careers of more than 5,000 medical students, approximately 1,000 residents and fellows and served as an advisor for eight doctoral candidates. Dr. Kampine was the associate chief of staff for research at the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Center where he championed an aggressive research effort culminating in developing new technology and publishing hundreds of original articles and investigations. His primary research interests were cardiovascular regulation during anesthesia and he co-authored the widely read textbook for medical and other health professional students entitled "Circulatory Physiology: the Essentials." In 1979, he was named chairman of the Anesthesia Department at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Kampine was president of the Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairmen, president of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, president of the American Heart Association (Wisconsin affiliate) and chairman of the Circulation Group of the American Physiological Society. He was named to the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and received the Award for Excellence in Research by the American Society of Anesthesiologists in 1992. Dr. Kampine was unanimously elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons & Anesthetists, Ireland. The Medical College honored him as the Alumnus of the Year in 1998 and the college established an endowed chair of anesthesia in his name in 1996. Medicine was his career, but his family was his greatest joy. He spent many years watching his children compete in sports and supporting their musical interests. His home was the hub of extended family celebrations populated by generations of relatives on both sides of the family. Visiting physicians and researchers from other countries were folded into the family and you simply pulled another chair up to the dinner table. As the family grew with marriages and grandchildren, the warmth and hospitality of the Kampine homes in Wisconsin and Florida extended to many. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, October 28th from 4 to 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Brookfield (1755 N. Calhoun Rd.) at 10 AM on Saturday, October 29, followed by graveside services at St. Joseph Cemetery, Waukesha. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Department of Anesthesia Research fund at the Medical College of Wisconsin, (Office of Development, 8701 Watertown Plank Rd., Wauwatosa, WI 53226.)
