My name is Denis Matisz.When I worked in the UBC Planning Dept. for close to 17 years, I commuted on an old 3 speed bike,often taking a shortcut through the forest trails. John, as the Accessibility Adviser,provided key information for every project. At that time,many of the older buildings on campus were totally inaccessible for people with disabilities. I have fond memories of the few times I interacted with John. He was warm, intelligent and funny. Reading his profile made feel honoured to have met John - a man of great character, determination, empathy and love of life. Hats off to a life filled with meaningful action! My deepest condolences to Diane and family.

John was such a welcoming and generous neighbour and friend who made me feel right at home when I moved in next door. I will miss him fondly and dearly

My condolences to his wife, family friends and so many admirers! I first met John in the mid 1990' and Knew him s a passionate advocate for persons with a spinal cord injury! he was a leader, an inspiration and most of all I knew him as a committed and passionate role model for people like me...he will be sorely missed!
