I had the privilege of getting to know John during a case in the mid 1990s. John was a professional and a gentleman who will be missed. My condolences and sympathies to all.

To the Lingners: I met John in the mid-80s, so I knew him for more than 15 years. And more or less, we stayed in touch over those years. John possessed the qualities that we all value in a friend -- he was smart, engaging, supportive, loyal.

But as I stood in my kitchen at midnight the day I learned of his death, the thing that kept popping into my brain was his omnipresent, and very dry, wit. And that wry grin. In the play Hamlet, Hamlet describes his deceased friend...

To the Ligner Family:

John was a good friend of mine from the ULC and I will miss our time playing gin on the 4th floor. Phil Wicklander and John used to play quite a bit, and I would shuffle the cards between hands and keep score.

It seemed as if everytime I sat down, no matter what the score of the game was, Phil would invariably gin - I used to have a lot of fun teasing John about that. He'd see me coming and would jokingly turn away.

Dear Margaret,
I remember you and John well from the days when (little) John was in Unit 7 Nursery School at Lab. You were a wonderful family and John was a wonderful father. Please accept my sincere condolences on your tremendous loss.
