Wilmot, NH-John C. Madden, 94, of Kearsarge Mountain Road, died Sat., May 28, 2005 at The Clough Center in New London. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on Jan. 6, 1911 the son of Newton B. and Elizabeth (Crane) Madden. He spent his early years in East Cleveland, OH attending Pittsburgh and East Cleveland schools. Mr. Madden graduated from Yale College in 1932 and from the Command and General Staff School, US Army in 1942. While at Yale he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, the Yale University football team and the American Olympic Team 1932. Mr. Madden served in the US Army during WWII. He served as Battery Commander, 47th F.S., Ft. Bragg, NC in 1941, on the Steel Committee, Army and Navy Munitions Board, Washington, DC in 1942, from 1943-1945 was with the 210th F.A. 33rd Division at Ft. Lewis, Washington and the South Pacific. He last assignment was C.O. of the Battalion and retired as Lt. Col. Mr. Madden spent most of his working life in steel sales with Youngstown Sheet and Tube, Portsmouth Steel Corp., Armco and A.M. Byers. He was the NY Manager for Portsmouth, Sales Manager of OIl Country Tubular Goods for Armco, and V.P. of Sales of A.M. Byers. He retired in 1969 and moved from Sewickley, PA to New London. Mr. Madden continued to work as a manufacturer's agent for the next six years. He lived in Wilmot since 1970. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New London and had been a Vestryman and Warden from 1973 to 1980. He had been a member of the University Club of Cleveland, Yale Club of NY, Engineers Club of NY, Touchdown Club of NY, Canoe Brook Country Club of Summit, NJ, Duquesne Club of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Country Club of Sewickley, Indianapolis Athletic Club, Harvard Club of Boston, County Squires, and the New London Boys Club. He was a past president of the Yale Club of NH. Mr. Madden had served as Scoutmaster and Civil Defense Director in Weston, MA and had been a Sunday School teacher and HiY Leader in Summit. He was active in fundraising in NY, Indianapolis, Summit, Sewickley, and New London. He was predeceased by his first wife of 50 years, Genevieve (Teachout) Madden in 1987, his second wife, Barbara S. (Cole) Madden in 1996, his son, John C. Madden, Jr., in 2004, and his brother, Arthur, in 1989. Members of his family surviving include a daughter, Margaret Eaton of Wilmot, NH; a daughter-in-law, Bryn Madden of Weston, MA; four grandsons, John C. Madden III, Nicholas Madden, Darren Huff, and Brandon Huff; two great grandchildren, John C. Madden IV and Charlotte Madden; and a sister, Betty Madden of East Cleveland, OH. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Gould Road, New London, NH with The Rev. Cricket Cooper, rector, officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257 or to the Upper Valley Humane Society, 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, NH 03748. Chadwick Funeral Service of New London, NH is in charge of arrangements.
