John Michael Mahardy Sr., 95, of Cleveland, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday. John was born on November 13, 1917, in Newport, NY, to a farm family of Irish-English ancestry. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1942, and served in the Pacific Theater for three years; earning the Bronze Battle Star, and various other citations. After returning home, he married the love of his life, Catherine Frances Rice, on April 26, 1947. They were joined as one for 58 years, until her passing in 2005. John worked as a machine repair technician at General Electric for 33 years, retiring in 1980. At which time he began to devote himself to his avocation, working in the woods. Along with his wife, Catherine, John was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Elizabeth, and a grandson, Bradley Charles Cone.
Surviving are, six daughters, Catherine (Mark) Bellinger, Pittsburgh, PA, Christine (Scott) Mahardy Heins-Hilton, Raleigh, NC, Maureen (Richard) Keller, Kalamazoo, MI, Joan (Daniel) Wells, Central Square, NY, Donna Cone, Solvay, NY, and Patricia (Daniel) Reynolds, Brewerton, NY; three sons, John Mahardy Jr., Cleveland, NY, Robert (Silke) Mahardy, Sherburne, NY, and Fred (Kathleen) Mahardy, Liverpool, NY; 28 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m., at Traub Funeral Home, Inc., 684 N. Main St., Central Square, NY 13036. A Mass of Resurrection will be Monday, 10 a.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption, in Cleveland, NY, with burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Cleveland, NY.
