Athens John Allen Matheny, age 83, passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 27, 2025, at his home in Athens, OH, surrounded by his family. Born May 24, 1942, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Carl Ralph & Dorotha Mae Matheny.
John, a long-time resident of Athens, graduated from Chauncey-Dover High School in 1960 prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army in June of that year. He honorably served for three years, with most of that time spent in Germany and France, where he was trained as a truck driver, delivering military supplies all over Europe. After his military service, John was employed with the Liggett Group before retiring in 2000 with more than 25 years. Well known in the community for playing an instrumental role in organizing City League Football, Baseball, and Girls Softball in the Chauncey area. He was very active in several veterans' clubs, where he held countless leadership roles, serving as Chair for a number of charity drives at the local and state level. John proudly served two consecutive five-year terms on the Athens County Veteran's Commission and was inducted into the Athens High School Hall of Fame in 2015. John will be remembered for his many years of service and dedication to God, Community, and Country.
John is survived by his two daughters, Lynn Jarman of Round Hill, VA, Joannie (Greg) Satterfield of Round Hill, VA; his son, Carl A. Matheny of Athens, OH; two grandsons, Storm Matheny of Charleston, WV, and Allen Satterfield of Round Hill, VA, and his brother Richard "Dick" Lee Matheny of Piqua, OH. Besides his parents, John is preceded in death by his former wife and good friend Judy A. Matheny.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, August 2nd, at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens at 2:30 p.m. with Gary Alton officiating. Interment will be at Conner Cemetery in Buchtel, OH, with Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 9893 Honor Guards. Family and friends may call Saturday 1-2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. 40 et 8 service will be Saturday at 2:20 p.m. at the funeral home. All are welcome to share food and fellowship at K.T. Crossen American Legion Post 21 following the graveside service.

I saw John at my dad’s funeral. Years he and dad refereed basketball, they did alot for our Chauncey community. John also sent me donations for my own cancer journey and it helped so much!! Great memories from the Savages!! He will be missed, thinking about Lynn, Joanie and Carl and family.
