John McGinnis Obituary

John Michael McGinnis, beloved husband of Judith DeLany McGinnis for 63 years died on May 10, 2017. Mr. McGinnis was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 4, 1934 to John Michael McGinnis, Sr., and Lorene Cornwell McGinnis (both deceased). He was raised in Dallas, NC and Gastonia, NC. He was a star athlete in his hometown playing football, basketball, and baseball. He received the Ernest Morgan Award. He was All State in football and All American chosen by Wigwam Wiseman of America. He received numerous scholarship offers for football and chose to accept a scholarship to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga where he met and eventually married Judith DeLany. After being injured at Georgia Tech playing football he ran SEC track. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Tech in Industrial Management. After graduation, he accepted a position with INA where he began a lifelong career in the insurance business. He served as a Lector in the Catholic Church. Known to his family as "Pa" and "My Daddy" he loved to serve you coffee or tea and toast whenever you visited. He loved music and would make sure you listened to the lyrics as he placed great importance on the lyrics of a song. He loved singing songs to his children and grandchildren. He loved to write articles and poems. He was a great fan of all genres of music. He was a big fan of Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Bread (If), Cold Play, and many many more. He never met a stranger and was kind and generous to everyone he would meet. He loved to tell jokes and make his family laugh. His life was full of love. He was preceded in death by his son, John Michael McGinnis, III and his sister Kay McGinnis Cornwell Suman. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Kelly McGinnis Dreher (Paul), son, Joseph Mark McGinnis (Christine), his grandchildren Kadi Dreher Malek (George), Kristen Dreher Kleinschrodt (Brian), Karoline Tracy Dreher (fiancé Gabriel), Madison DeLany McGinnis, Aiden Michael McGinnis, Austin Mark McGinnis, and his great grandchildren Nicolas Paul Malek, Nathan Michael Malek, Grayson Paul Kleinschrodt, and Emma Marie Kleinschrodt. He was also much loved by his extended family and will be greatly missed by Maria Arita and Esteban Arita. The family would like to thank Dr. Benjamin Jacobs (cardiologist) at East Jefferson Hospital for taking such good care of him over the last 20 years. We would like to thank Dr. Quynh Mai of East Jefferson Medical Clinic for his compassionate care and Dawn at Dr. Mai's office for always assisting us whenever we called. We would also like to thank the CCU nurses Scott and Georgia for trying so hard to save his life. The family will gather for a Celebration of Life at a later date.

To my friend, Kelly, with heartfelt condolences. Very saddened to hear about your Dad. Please give my love to your Mom and family. It is a beautiful description of your Dad's remarkable life .... I learned things I had never known. And, smiled deeply remembering your Dad -- and his bringing us toast and coffee! I just thought it was something he did when we visited.....didn't know it was a lifelong "trademark." And, I always loved your Dad entertaining us with a story or joke...and his magnetic personality. Your Dad was someone I always looked up to. Blessings to you and your beautiful family for peace and wonderful memories of your Dad always. Love, Deb

We had so many fun times laughing! Especially the place we visited in Grayton Beach , Fl. Where we ate ordurves like a dinner and drank wine at the open house. And then to top it off the car heater stopped working. Oh what a night! You will be so missed!

I am so sorry, my heart too is broken! Mike was the nicest, kindest, funniest brother-in-law anyone could ask for! He, and his love Judy, were the greatest couple and always made us feel so at home whenever we visited! I loved the times we spent together at their wonder beach condo in Destin, and their beautiful home in New Orleans. I can still hear Mike and my late husband Joe, singing and laughing and carrying on about their beloved Georgia Tech! They are together again now, probably playing football. I loved to listen to Mike sing while Joe played the guitar, those were happy, great times!

Please know I send all my love and prayers for comfort on the loss of this wonderful man, I loved him dearly! He will be missed by many. His devotion to his Judy and wonderful children was unsurpassed and there are no words to comfort you at this time. Just sending love, hugs and prayers to all.

I will miss him telling me how much he loved me every single day. I will miss him fixing me coffee and toast and asking me if my coffee was okay and if I wanted more before I even had time to take a few sips. I will miss sharing music with him and playing the same songs over and over until we both knew the lyrics! If only I had one more day I would hug him over and over and tell him how much I would miss him! He loved for me to call him "My Daddy" and I will miss walking in to give him a hug and saying "Hi My Daddy". He will always be in my heart and I will always remember how he taught me to love everyone. He taught me how to love through great times but also how to love through heartbreak and tragedy. He was a wonderful man and I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. Watch over me My Daddy and always know that you were the best daddy a girl could ever have! Thank you for a lifetime of wonderful memories. Until we meet again Rest In Peace. I love you forever.
